Women Are Rewriting the Rules of Thrillers

In a literary landscape once dominated by male detectives and action heroes, women protagonists are now taking center stage in thrillers, horror fiction, and murder mysteries. Among the writers contributing to this shift is Jiganshu Sharma, an author known for blending suspense, horror, humor, and emotional depth in her stories.

Her recent novel, The Sanskari Girlfriend, features a strong female protagonist, continuing a pattern visible across most of her works. Her women characters are not merely survivors waiting to be rescued — they fight their own battles and often protect the people they love.

But is this merely a literary trend, or does it reflect changing realities in society?

Speaking about the inspiration behind her writing, Jiganshu shares that since childhood she observed her mother balancing professional success with family responsibilities. That image stayed with her and eventually shaped the women she writes about today.

Much like her characters, Jiganshu herself balances multiple roles — a working professional, a bestselling author, and a mother of two children. This lived experience brings authenticity to her fiction, where women are shown taking charge of life on multiple fronts.

The Sanskari Girlfriend follows the story of Aarya Sharma, who wakes up alone in a hotel room in Venice during her honeymoon, only to discover that her husband has mysteriously vanished. As events unfold, she is told that her husband never accompanied her to Venice at all, making her question her own sanity. However, trusting her instincts, Aarya begins searching for the truth. Her investigation eventually uncovers one of India’s biggest illegal arms and ammunition rackets.

Apart from her novels, Jiganshu Sharma has also been acknowledged by several newspapers and literary platforms. She was recently invited as a speaker at the World Book Fair for her thriller fiction and Hindi poetry.

Known for adding unexpected humor even in dark narratives, she has earned appreciation for crafting stories filled with suspense and cliffhanger endings that leave readers stunned.

When asked how she manages her demanding schedule, Jiganshu credits time management and family support. She also emphasizes the importance of equality in marriage, sharing that her husband actively contributes to household responsibilities and parenting.

Perhaps that balance also reflects in her storytelling — while her women protagonists are fearless and independent, the men in her stories are often supportive partners rather than mere side characters.

In many ways, writers like Jiganshu Sharma are not just telling thrilling stories; they are quietly reshaping how strength, partnership, and womanhood are portrayed in modern Indian fiction.
