The detention of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro by the United States has triggered strong reactions across the global diplomatic landscape, raising serious questions about sovereignty, international law, and geopolitical stability. The unfolding situation has drawn responses from major world powers, reflecting sharply divided views on the legality and consequences of the action.
UNAccc Global Vice Chairman and diplomat Karim Errouaki described the development as a highly complex episode with long-term implications for global governance. He noted that the incident could influence how international law is interpreted and enforced in future cross-border political actions.
UNAccc Global Founder Dr Rajat Sharma echoed these concerns, stressing that the situation demands restraint and responsible diplomacy. Aligning with India’s External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar, Dr Sharma emphasised that constructive engagement among all stakeholders remains essential to protect the interests, safety, and human rights of the Venezuelan people. He reiterated that lasting solutions can only emerge through inclusive dialogue rather than confrontation.
Global reactions to the development have been deeply polarised. China has condemned the US action as hegemonic and a violation of international law, while Russia has strongly criticised the operation, citing breaches of sovereignty. Iran has also denounced the move, calling for respect for Venezuela’s territorial integrity. In contrast, Israel has expressed support for Maduro’s detention, pointing to alleged human rights violations, while Ukraine has backed steps it says prioritise the interests of the Venezuelan population.
The incident has reignited debate over the limits of state power and the legality of unilateral actions against sitting heads of state. Analysts warn that such developments could reshape international norms, affect regional stability in Latin America, and set precedents with global repercussions. The episode underscores the growing challenge of balancing national interests with established international frameworks.
Reaffirming India’s position, External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar urged all concerned parties to exercise restraint and focus on the welfare of Venezuelan citizens. “We would urge all parties to sit down and come to a position which is in the interest of the well-being and safety of the people of Venezuela,” he said.
UNAccc reiterated its support for diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalation, unity, and sustainable peace, highlighting India’s long-standing commitment to people-centric engagement and development-focused partnerships in Latin America and beyond.
