Dhananjay Makes History as President of JNU Students Union, United Left Sweeps All Positions

In the Jawaharlal Nehru University Student Union elections, the Left has made its candidates win on all the posts. Left’s joint presidential candidate Dhananjay has won with a huge majority. After almost two and a half decades, a Dalit has won the post of President in JNU. Dhananjay is a resident of Gaya, Bihar. The Left panel has been successful in winning other posts also.

Student elections have been held in JNU after four years. In the voting held on Friday, 73 percent student voters exercised their franchise. Voting percentage is the highest in the last 12 years. Around 7700 voters voted for various posts.

Who won?

United Left has won the elections on all the posts. Dhananjay has been declared victorious on the post of President, Avijit Ghosh has won on the post of Vice President, Mohammad Sajid has won on the post of Joint Secretary. Left supported Priyanshi Arya of BAPSA has won the election for the post of General Secretary.

Who got how many votes?

Dhananjay, who won the post of president, got 2574 votes. While ABVP’s Umesh got 2039 votes. Vice President elected Avijit Ghosh got 2409 votes. Left supported BAPSA’s candidate Priyanshi Arya, elected for the post of General Secretary, got 2887 votes. Joint Secretary Mohammad Sajid got 2574 votes.

About 19 candidates were in the fray for the posts of Student Union President, Vice President, Joint Secretary and General Secretary in JNU. Apart from this, 42 school counselors were also in the field. This time United Left was contesting the elections. All India Students Association i.e. AISA, Democratic Students Federation i.e. DSF, Students Federation of India i.e. SFI, and All India Students Federation had fielded joint candidates from the United Left Morcha. In this panel, Dhananjay was nominated for the post of Chairman, Avijit Ghosh for the post of Vice Chairman and Mohammad Sajid for the post of Joint Secretary. Whereas the Left had supported BAPSA candidate Priyanshi Arya for the post of General Secretary.

Whereas ABVP i.e. Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad had nominated Umesh Chandra Ajmira for the post of President, Deepika Sharma for the post of Vice President, Arjun Anand for the post of General Secretary and Govind Dangi for the post of Joint Secretary. BAPSA had also nominated Biswajit Minji for the post of President, Mohammad Anas for the post of Vice President, Priyanshi Arya for the post of General Secretary and Rupak Kumar Singh for the post of Joint Secretary.
