As the iconic television show Sapna Babul Ka… Bidaai marks 18 years since its debut, Bahnishikha Das looks back with deep gratitude and nostalgia on being part of a journey that redefined family dramas on Indian television, as a writer.
Bahnishikha, who served as the story writer for a significant period during the show’s run, recalls the experience as one of the most creatively fulfilling and learning phases of her career. “It feels surreal to realize that Bidaai completes 18 years today. I had the honor of writing the story for quite some time during the period when the characters and emotional arcs had truly begun to evolve. The show wasn’t just a television series — it was an emotion that touched millions,” she says.
Produced by Rajan Shahi under Director’s Kut Productions, Bidaai premiered in 2007 and quickly became one of Star Plus’s biggest successes. The story, revolving around two sisters — Sadhna and Ragini — beautifully explored themes of love, beauty, prejudice, and familial bonds. The show’s emotional storytelling, relatable characters, and progressive narrative won hearts across generations.
Reflecting on the creative process, Bahnishikha shares, “What made Bidaai special was the honesty in its writing. Every scene was created with the intent to reflect real emotions — whether it was the tenderness between sisters or the unspoken understanding within families. I still remember the discussions, the brainstorming sessions, and the collective excitement we felt while shaping the story. Those moments were pure magic.”
Bahnishikha also expresses admiration for producer Rajan Shahi’s clarity of vision, leadership, and motivational qualities. “Rajan ji had a very strong sense of what he wanted the show to communicate. His conviction and eye for emotional detail made all the difference. Working under his banner was a learning experience in itself, and his motivational attitude toward every team member, including me, was incomparable,” she adds.
“In fact, Rajan would call first thing in the morning at 7:30 a.m., just to encourage me and appreciate my writing, saying my contribution to the show was a breath of fresh air,” says Bahnishikha happily today. She also recalls how the channel team at the time was hugely supportive of her and continues to cheer for her in every success.
Known for her sensitivity in storytelling, Bahnishikha continues to craft narratives that strike an emotional chord. For her, the anniversary of Bidaai is not just a reminder of past success but a reaffirmation of her creative purpose. “Shows like Bidaai remind me why I chose to write — because stories have the power to connect hearts, heal minds, and leave an imprint that time cannot erase,” she concludes with a smile.
Eighteen years later, Bidaai still lives on — not just through its reruns, but through the people who created it and the audiences who continue to cherish its essence. And for Bahnishikha Das, it will always remain a chapter close to her heart.
